AccuWeather kartlägger dig även om du inte vill

Väderappen AccuWeather fortsätter att samla in positionsdata om användare, även efter det att appen slagits av och öven om du slagit av funktionen.

Det är säkerhetsexperten Will Strafach som kartlagt vad AccuWeather gör, vilka data som samlas in var dessa data skickas.

AccuWeather ber om tillstånd att samla in data och skriver också in sina användarvillkor att data samla in. Så långt följer AccuWeather Apples regelverk.

Reklam

De data som samlas in är positionsdata, om bluetooth är påslaget eller inte och om hur du är uppkopplad. Informationen skickas bland annat till revealmobile.com :

Our technology sits inside hundreds of apps across the United States. It turns the location data coming out of those apps into meaningful audience data. We listen for lat/long data and when a device “bumps” into a Bluetooth beacon. The data shown on the following pages reflects 102,535 opted-in location sharing mobile devices that we saw at retail locations Friday, November 25th, 2016.

Informationen säljs och används för riktad reklam till AccuWeathers användare.

Samlar in

Säger du nej till att låta AccuWeather samla in data så görs det i alla fall. AccuWetaher samlar då in positionsdata baserad på om du är uppkopplad via Wifi. Något mindre detaljerad data men ändå, AccuWeather samlar in information trots att du nekat appen till att göra det.

The “location data coming out of those apps” would your precise GPS coordinates (Access granted under a more reasonable guise of weather alerts), and Wi-Fi router name/BSSID. If you do not grant AccuWeather access to your GPS information, it will still send your Wi-Fi router name and BSSID, providing RevealMobile access to less precise location information regarding your device’s whereabouts. This practice by a different company appears to have previously caught the attention of the FTC.

Plex kommer att samla in data om dig och du kan inte slå av funktionen

Från och med den 20 september så kommer du inte längre kunna slå av datainsamlandet i Plex. Användarreglerna har ändrats och funktionen kommer att vara tvingande.

Plex vill samla in data om antalet anslutna privata servrar, ur länge de används och en del tekniska data runt vad vi tittar på. Plex försäkrar att de inte är intresserade av att identifiera enskilda användare och inte heller vad användarna tittar på, i detalj.

So rather than try to enumerate all of exceptions, we decided: (1) to make it even more clear that we don’t collect data that tells us what is in your library; (2) to remove the opt out provision primarily to be more clear up front (but also acknowledging that the data is clearly useful); and (3) to be very transparent about what we do, and don’t do, with the data (including Section F, whoch prohibits us from selling your data).

Plex säger sig behöva de uppgifterna för att kunna underhålla och utveckla sina tjänster och de lovar också att inga uppgifter ska föras vidare eller säljas.

Protester mot Googles kartläggning av dina köp på nätet

The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) har lämnat in ett formellt klagomål mot Googles kartläggning av enskildas köp på nätet och att den informationen kopplas samman med annan insamlad data.

Google samlar in information om vilka annonser du klickar på, vilka hemsidor du besöker och det du gör på nätet. EPIC protesterar nu mot sökjättens kartläggning av hur vi handlar på nätet och att den informationen samkörs mot annan information som Google samlar in om oss.

Google has collected billions of credit card transactions, containing personal customer information, from credit card companies, data brokers, and others and has linked those records with the activities of Internet users, including product searches and location searches. This data reveals sensitive information about consumer purchases, health, and private lives. According to Google, it can track about 70% of credit and debit card transactions in the United States.

Ryssland förbjuder VPN-appar

Ryssland har förbjudit VPN-appar vilket innebär att från och med den 1 november så kommer Apple att tvingas att plocka bort dem ur Mac App Store och App Store.

Den nya lagen är en parallell till Kina där Apple nyligen tvingades att plocka bort VPN-appar ur App Store.

The new law (link via Google Translate), signed today by President Vladimir Putin, goes into effect on Nov. 1 and represents another major blow to an open Internet. This weekend, news broke that Apple has removed most major VPN apps from the App Store in China to comply with regulations passed earlier this year that require VPN apps to be explicitly licensed by the Chinese government.
