A partial government shutdown on Friday is looking more likely after a second fatal shooting in Minnesota involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Soon after the killing of US citizen Alex Pretti, some Senate Democrats who supported the bipartisan deal to reopen the government in November said they would oppose a six-bill funding package if it includes the Department of Homeland Security.

That leaves the broader funding measure short of 60 votes; Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said on Saturday night that “Senate Democrats will not provide the votes to proceed to the appropriations bill if the DHS funding bill is included.”

But what would-be buyers may not know is the tech behind this isn’t necessarily US-made. Pinterest is experimenting with Chinese AI models to hone its recommendation engine.

”We’ve effectively made Pinterest an AI-powered shopping assistant,” the firm’s boss Bill Ready told me.

Developers who openly admit that they no longer understand their own code? That sounds like a nightmare for any IT department. Whether AI will ultimately save us more time or lead us into debugging hell is the big bet for the next few years.

Casey Bloys, senior Netflix executive?

In a lengthy interview with Ben Thompson of Stratechery, Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters said he and (fellow co-CEO) Ted Sarandos plan to keep “that HBO team” in tact post-acquisition. It’s a smart move considering what Bloys and co. have accomplished, and while expected by most sharps in the industry, had not previously been affirmed so definitively.

What Netflix plans to do with HBO/Max from an integration POV is still a bit unclear.

Filmmakers and actors whose careers were shaped by Robert Redford and the Sundance Institute he founded reflected on his legacy as the godfather of independent cinema at a star-studded gala Friday night during the first Sundance Film Festival since his death.

The 2026 festival — its last in Utah, before relocating to Boulder, Colorado — is a love letter to the haven Redford established in the state decades ago for stories that didn’t fit into the mainstream.

Even as the festival heads to its new home, the piece of Redford’s legacy that his daughter said meant the most to him will remain in Utah: the institute’s lab programs for writers and directors.

“When my dad could have created an empire, he created a nest,” said his daughter, Amy Redford. “The Sundance Institute was designed to support and protect and nourish and then set free.”
