Big tech continues to bend the knee to Trump a year after his inauguration

Hello, and welcome to TechScape. I’m your host, Blake Montgomery, the Guardian’s US tech editor.

One year ago today, Donald Trump was inaugurated as president of the United States. Standing alongside him that day were the leaders of the tech industry’s most powerful companies, who had donated to him in an unprecedented bending of the knee. In the ensuing year, the companies have reaped enormous rewards from their alliance with Trump, which my colleague Nick Robins-Early and I wrote about last month after Trump signed an executive order prohibiting states from passing laws regulating AI. Trump has sponsored the tech industry with billions in government funding and with diplomatic visits that featured CEOs as his fellow negotiators in massive, lucrative deals.

Your Cosmic Orange iPhone 17 Pro probably won’t turn pink

Late last year, a Reddit post caused something of a furore. A user posted a photo of their Cosmic Orange iPhone 17 Pro that had turned pink. A few other examples followed.

However, while you should continue to follow Apple’s advice on how to avoid this, tests have shown it’s unlikely to happen accidentally …

The new Cosmic Orange color introduced with the launch of the iPhone 17 Pro proved a popular one. However, some owners found that they were experiencing discoloration. The casing was turning to either a pink or rose gold colour.

The NBA courts Gulf funds for new European league

The next target for the Gulf’s apparently insatiable appetite for sports and leisure deals could be professional basketball — with the NBA trying to entice Middle East sovereign funds to invest in a new, European league.

Gulf investors already own soccer giants like Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, part of a global spree that has seen them pour funds into boxing, cycling, golf, and F1, alongside more sedentary pursuits like e-sports. Sovereign wealth funds have long had designs on the NBA but can’t own more than 20% of a basketball franchise in the US. There are no such restrictions in Europe.

The musician and singer “died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones”, according to a statement on the Sydney band’s social media today (Tuesday January 20).

“After fighting heroically for almost three years, Rob is now free of pain – ‘a glimmer of tiny light in the wilderness’,” the post read.

Last April, Hirst shared that he had been living with stage three pancreatic cancer since 2023. “I’ve had pretty much every treatment known to man – every scan, ultrasound, MRI,” he said at the time. I’ve kind of had ‘the works’.”
